Quote for the day: “I have dined with kings, I’ve been offered wings. And I’ve never been too impressed.” ~ Bob Dylan
Complacency sucks. People with a smug sense of self-righteousness piss me off. Not just a little…I’m talking about the kind of angry that causes my fangs and claws to sprout. Regrettably, I deal with these kinds of people far too often in my life. I grow weary.
Just this morning a person, of whom shall remain nameless, remarked “how often I seem to be on the computer” and “how he just can’t believe I have that much time in the day to indulge in frivolous social networking sites” because, “even ‘without kids’ (yes, he placed remarkably disparaging emphasis on the ‘kid’ part, no doubt in an effort to ruffle my feathers, as I have two and he has none) “he could only, at best (again with the ‘tone’), get on the computer once every couple of weeks.”
Blah, blah, blah. Attack, attack, attack. Judge, judge, judge. Ah, jackassery at its finest.
He went on to insinuate that my wasted endeavors and idleness, have directly led to my less than favorable financial situation. Um, yah. That's it. Thanks for clarifying that for me. Well it must be, he concluded, because here he and his wife are currently sitting on top of the world. They have more than they know what to do with. They travel all over the world. They live in a not-so-humble abode within an exclusive community and drive fancy, imported cars. Well good for you asshole.
Hm. Well, perhaps you don't have the time because the nauseatingly needy-but-suitably-wealthy, pretty-prissy-princess stepford wife you married sucks up 99.99999999% of your existence. She doesn’t even let you take a shit without telling her, in excruciating detail, where you are and what you’re doing. She’s a pitiable, quasi-dominatrix, pathetically disguised beneath an eight hundred dollar Armani business suit, four hundred dollar Prada shoes and a seven hundred dollar Coach purse.
Perhaps you don't have financial issues because, like a parasitic tapeworm your wife attaches herself to every facet of your life. She throws money at your feet but allows you zero freedom to be the beautiful, fun individual you used to be. You and your forty grand a year paycheck lead the glamorous lifestyle you do, not because of your contribution, but because she not only funds all of it, she calls all the shots. Period. Sorry dude, but you’ve officially become a soulless, pussy-whipped, generic, yuppie drone who has no friends outside of her circle and no life outside of her interests. You’ve given up everything you believed in and sold your soul for status in society and the almighty dollar. How’s that working out for you?
Yet I remained silent.
I stepped back and paused for a moment to accost this barrage of judgmental, knee-jerk quips just waiting to eject from my larynx. I used to be really great at spewing comebacks and not so great at holding back. These days I find myself biting my tongue, for I simply haven’t the energy to engage in senseless banter. Yet, I’m not certain this approach is doing me any favors. I zip my lips and internalize. Not such a great thing for my upper G.I. track, as I’ve recently discovered.
I take it all in, mull over it ad nauseam, process it and then write about it.
I just wish people would look in the mirror more and truly see themselves for who they really are. Everyone judges. It is in our nature to do so. I just wish more people would do as I do and bite their tongues rather than verbally assault other people for how they live their lives. Do I agree with how this person lives his life? No. Am I going to confront him on the matter and project onto him my own convictions on the matter? No. What works for some does not necessarily work for all. Righteousness is completely subjective. No one is better than the next. We are all flawed and we all need to get over ourselves. Really.
While I do have my opinions on a great many things, I simply choose to write about them. Writing has, always will be, my release. I find this artform to be the purest and most beautiful platform for self-expression.
Sure, I'm quite the orator and would have no qualms about standing up on my soapbox to pontificate on this matter and many others. But, I find I do less damage this way.
